The Derwent Valley is so named because of its extensive coverage by native oak woodlands: Derwent means ‘valley thick with oaks’. Allensford Woods – small oak woodland around Allensford Country Park with footpath network.
Castle Hill Wood, near Castleside – a young woodland, planted with native trees and shrubs in 2000 offering fantastic views of the surrounding landscape.
Chopwell Woodland Park – large woodland with walking and cycle trails, sculptures and heritage sites. Visit the Friends of Chopwell Wood to find out about the events and activities running in the Wood.
Derwent Gorge and Muggleswick Woods – fantastic ancient oak woodlands in beautiful gorge setting.
Milkwellburn Wood – peaceful oak woodland nature reserve with surfaced paths.
Pontburn Woods – peaceful woodland with good footpath network.
Burnopfield Woodland – a medium size wood above the town with a good path network and a variety of trees.
Thornley Wood – part of Derwenthaugh Park with a good footpath network.
