Traces of a Journey – Brian Eyler Photography

We start the New Year with this stunning exhibition of Brian Eyler’s landscape photography in our Inside Out Gallery at Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre.  ‘Traces of a Journey – Explorations of Depth, Light, and Presence’

Brian is a professional landscape photographer originally from San Diego, now living in Newcastle. After moving in 2019 to join his wife, Brian shifted gears when the COVID-19 pandemic paused his video production business. Instead of stepping back, he returned to photography — his passion for over a decade. Inspired by classical oil painters like Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Kinkade, Brian injects a real romantic style to his work. His portfolio is filled with painterly compositions and cinematic technique.

An iron bridge cuts across the middle of the photography, and the house is reflected perfectly in the water below. All around is vibrant green vegetation and pops of red and purple from flower bushes.

Creating His Work

“It’s funny how, sometimes, the shots you barely consider in the moment become the ones that mean the most. That sunset, glowing between the dip and through the tree’s delicate outline, brought everything into balance — the landscape, the light, and the silence. There were no tourists, no wind, no distractions. Just us and that tree. “

Brian’s work often incorporates dramatic lighting and vibrant colours – catching landscapes at the golden hour, sunset and sunrise. This signature part of his style makes his photography so recognisable. He values both a technical eye but also his intuition to capture moments that contrast the bold colours he captures and the calm atmosphere of the scenes. He invites reflection and complete absorption into the landscapes, clever editing adding a fantastical and awe-inspiring finish.

Want to see them for yourself? The exhibition will run from the 7th January to the 1st of March, and will be displayed in our Inside Out Gallery. All prints and pictures will be available to buy at the Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre – just ask a member of staff. Brian is also a regular at the Quayside and Tynemouth Market, known for connecting with the local community.
