About Bethan Laker

Bethan Laker lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne, where she loves turning wonky, messy drawings into original, witty illustrations, products, and artworks. She draw with bold lines, collage, and print to produce colourful responses to everyday life.

Bethan studied Illustration at Norwich School of Art and Design, and loves riding her bike, pickle ball, the sea, charity shops, vintage ceramics and cutlery – all of which feature in her work.

She enjoy old books, charity shop treasures, netball, cycling, wildlife, and eating cheese scones with strong coffee. She shares life with two wildling children, two enormous rabbits, a temperamental goldfish, and a messy old house.

Workshops

Bethan Laker also hosts workshops, she makes work in collaboration with community groups. She helps people doodle, draw, print, and collage interesting, personal artworks for their environments and for printed projects, and enjoys helping them solve problems through design.

Over the last 15 years, she has enjoyed working with many communities throughout the North East in numerous settings and locations. Each project and outcome is unique, and she spends time listening and developing ideas, whether the group wants to create an exhibition, mural, or product. Smaller groups can also come and work in her studio to experience what it’s like to be a self-employed creative for a day.

“West Jesmond Art Ambassadors had an amazing time working collaboratively on a giant mural with Bethan. The children really enjoyed participating with her in workshops in school, where Bethan helped them develop their initial ideas, and taught them new techniques. They loved the way Bethan took their actual hand drawn images and reproduced them digitally in the finished artwork.”

“I was really impressed with the way Bethan let the children take ownership of the project, and made sure everyone was involved in the design process- drawing on the differing artistic strengths of the children.”

We are hoping to do a workshop with Bethan in the future, Keep an eye on our social media and website!
