‘The Big Small Nature Club’ with Josie Brooks & Tom Madge

Our Inside Out Gallery is being taken over by illustrator Josie Brookes and artist Tom Madge, creators of the Big Small Nature Club.

Two people stand next to each-other in an underpass decorated with a fun and lively mural. On the left is Tom Madge, dressed in a bright orange shirt and denim jacket. On the right is Josie Brookes, dressed in a black shirt with white hearts and bottle green jacket.

About the Artists

Both local artists based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, they have created a series of bold artworks. They are exploring how we could help animals if we were shrunk down small or became massive giants! Aimed at children, these beautiful collage and risograph artworks are lively, colourful and beautifully textured.

“I think my illustration style has evolved with me. At the core, my work focuses on character and colour. Most of the time I represent things from my own perspective rather than in a realistic way. I like to experiment with processes. The way it’s made – be it using pen, collage, print or digital techniques – can vary, and overlap, but always has those common themes.” – Josie Brookes

Tom Madge is a part of AnimateCity and took animation workshops into children’s and teenage cancer wards, as a creative outlet for kids who are too ill to leave the hospital. He also created bright and playful murals to give the wards a friendlier atmosphere. Josie Brookes inspires young people through amazing workshops, using a fun multi-media approach. She is informed by a background in printmaking and a love of the natural world.

A framed artwork on a white painted wall. A sign underneath it reads 'Big Small Nature Club Emblem. Original mixed media from the Big Small Nature Club series (2025). £100.'. The artwork is a circular emblem made from collaged paper, with 'Big Small Nature Club' in big blocky test accompanied by two bright paper leaves. The background is a messy mix of greens that emulate a carpet of leaves.
