The Land of Oak & Iron

From Folkworks to Ironworks

The Land of Oak & Iron is delighted to announce the appointment of Ros Rigby OBE to their Executive Board, which is responsible for the strategic direction, governance and legacy of this highly regarded Landscape Partnership.

After training as a dancer at the Royal Ballet School (White Lodge), she earned a degree at University of Edinburgh and then a Post Graduate Diploma in Arts Administration run by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Following several community arts roles, from the early 1980s she created and led new programmes of arts and cultural development
for Gateshead Council as the first Arts Development Officer in the North of England. In 1999, Ros was awarded the OBE for her work as founding Co-Director of Folkworks, developing the organisation into the UK’s foremost producer, presenter and educator in folk and traditional music. Folkworks, with Northern Sinfonia, was a founding partner of the music venue Sage Gateshead and in 2001 Ros was appointed Performance Programme Director with responsibility for all areas of popular and contemporary music.

Ros stepped down from her full time role at Sage Gateshead this summer and living in the Derwent Valley, on which the Land of Oak & Iron focuses, she felt joining the Executive Board would be a fulfilling and worthwhile activity. “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Board of Land of Oak & Iron at this important moment in the project’s development. It will be a great pleasure to be involved in something which aims to raise the profile of the area in which I have lived for over thirty years”.

John Rundle, Chair of the Land of Oak & Iron Executive Board said, “Ros brings a fantastic range of experience and contacts to the Board and we are looking forward to working with her. Her wealth of knowledge and expertise in the arts, music and cultural sectors along with her strong local and European linkages will be invaluable. Ros will lead the Boards work in developing and strengthening the cultural and tourism activities in the Land of Oak & Iron”.
