Who Is Kate Miller?
Kate Miller is a printmaker working in linocut whose work is currently up in our Inside Out Gallery. She makes layered reduction prints, mainly of landscapes but sometimes of botanical subjects or natural forms. Her inspiration comes from being outside in the fresh air in her corner of the world – the northeast of England.
Kate works from a home studio in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she is very close to beautiful countryside and coastline, so there is no end of inspiration to hand. Recently she has been working on a series of small prints of natural forms celebrating the beauty and resilience of nature, and also on a series of prints exploring the North Sea.

What is Lino Printing
Lino printing, also known as linocut, is a printmaking technique where artists carve a design into a linoleum block, apply ink to the raised areas, and transfer the image onto paper or fabric. This method is popular among both beginners and professional artists due to its accessibility and the bold, graphic quality of the resulting prints.
How It Works:
- Design Transfer: Artists begin by drawing or transferring a design onto a linoleum block. This design is carved in reverse, as the uncarved areas will remain white in the final print.
- Carving: Using specialized tools, the artist carefully carves away the areas of the block that they do not want to print. The remaining raised areas will hold the ink.
- Inking: A thin layer of ink is applied to the carved block using a roller (brayer). The ink adheres only to the raised surfaces.
- Printing: Paper or fabric is placed over the inked block, and pressure is applied—either by hand using a tool called a baren or spoon, or with a printing press—to transfer the ink onto the
- Repetition: The process can be repeated to produce multiple copies of the same design.
The Inside Out Gallery
We offer a unique space for local artists to display their art in our centre. Our Inside our Gallery showcases one local artist’s work at a time in our cafe windows. It is called the Inside Out Gallery as it is to be viewed from our courtyard through the windows. We love supporting local businesses from the North East, so creating this gallery allows us to shine a light on the incredible talent we have right on our doorstep.
