Join local walk leader Kath for a friendly monthly history walk in the beautiful Land of Oak & Iron.

Set in the stunning lower Derwent Valley, this scenic route offers a rich mix of woodland, meadows, and riverside paths—alongside fascinating stories from the area’s past. On this walk, you’ll discover more about the history and heritage of Derwenthaugh Park and valley, with an experienced Ramblers walk leader.

The walk covers approximately 2.5–3 miles at a comfortable, easy pace to suit the group. There is a short climb of 33 steps and a gentle ascent up to Kite Hill, both taken slowly with rest stops as needed.

It’s a great opportunity to step into the area’s rich past, uncover the stories of the valley, and learn more about the heritage that has shaped the landscape—all while enjoying fresh air and good company along the way.

Please come dressed appropriately for the outdoors, with sturdy footwear. Waterproofs are recommended depending on the weather.

These walks are organised with our partners at Gateshead Council’s Active Travel Public Health & Wellbeing.

Free event, limited places so booking essential – please see tickets below.
