#fridaybirdie Exhibition – Katherine Rodger
Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host this new solo exhibition #fridaybirdie by Katherine Rodger, a local artist and art tutor based in Rowlands Gill.
Katherine’s #fridaybirdie began with a lockdown challenge from the National History Museum to post a nature drawing every day using the hashtag #naturedrawingclub, the challenge grew from there.
“Having recently produced a few paintings of birds I thought I’d post one of them.
I didn’t stop! Every Friday I’ve continued to post a bird painting adding the hashtag ’#fridaybirdie’ which has meant producing a new painting every week.
In the normal world I’m an art tutor and painter, working from my home in the lovely Derwent Valley, North East England. Covid meant an immediate change of direction for me as all of my teaching work disappeared overnight. Setting myself the task of having to post a new ‘Friday birdie’ every week kept me focused, kept me sane and has certainly kept me happy. I now have quite a collection of birdies and feel that, after 30 years in the arts, I’ve finally found my thing!
My paintings are selling, I’ve teamed up with a local printer and now have a range of ‘Friday birdie’ products to offer. I launched the range at a recent ‘meet the maker’ event at Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre and this was really successful so I’m now setting up an Etsy shop.”
Katherine’s original artwork is on display at the Heritage Centre’s ‘inside out gallery’ where it can be viewed from the Courtyard area,
