Event Details

Land of Oak & Iron Trust are delighted to join with the History of Consett Steelworks Project to have the launch of a new edition of ‘Thread of Iron’ included in their events programme during the afternoon of Saturday 12th September 2020.

A video for the launch event has been made and has been uploaded to YouTube

Following the book launch you can buy a copy of the new edition from the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill and at future events organised by the Trust.

We will also be displaying some interpretation panels exploring the history of steelmaking in the area.

For now let us just tell you a little more about the book:

“The year 2020 is the 40th anniversary of the closure of the Consett Steel Works and it is fitting that we commemorate this milestone with the publication of a new edition of Thread of Iron, written by Douglas Vernon and first published by Able Press in 2003.

As the sub-title suggests, the author gives a wonderful “definitive history of Shotley Bridge and Consett and district, County Durham with particular reference to iron and steel making”.

Now in a smaller format to suit modern publishing standards the original text has been faithfully reproduced and shows how extensively the influence of activities in the area spread.
