Our next exhibition in the ‘Inside Out Gallery’ at the Heritage Centre is ‘The Geordie Boy Collection – A nostalgic look back at yesteryear’ by local artist Andrew Sugden.

Andy is a self taught Artist and Illustrator,  and is proud to say that he’s a Geordie! He was born in the 1960’s and grew-up in Gateshead, a fantastic location in the North East of England!
“I’ve always had a passion for Art and I began to draw and paint from a very young age, in fact I would often have a pencil or paint brush in my hand and be “having a go at something”
As I worked my way through the school years, I was encouraged by many of my teachers to pursue my passion! And as my interest grew even deeper, my attention to the detail in my drawings and paintings became even more evident.  During the 1970’s I joined the Art Society at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead and attended the weekly art club meetings which were held there throughout the 1970’s and into the early eighties.  It was a great environment and an excellent opportunity to mix with other local artists and to try out different techniques.
On leaving school I went into the printing industry and got involved with graphic design, lithographic and screen process printing – I eventually had my own printing companies during the 1980’s and 1990’s.  During the late 1990’s I also moved into product design and development of artistic glass giftware – so I have always had a creative background.
Living here in the North East, we are so lucky to have the best of both worlds right on our doorstep, may this be the amazingly beautiful sprawling countryside, or the stunning rugged coastline, and of course not forgetting the many historical towns and cities to inspire many an urban landscape or nostalgic scene.
The inspiration for my latest range of paintings ‘The Geordie Boy Collection’ stems from my own childhood memories of playing out with mates and the adventures we used to get up to whilst growing up, especially building bogies and bombing doon the cobbled backlanes! But whatever the painting, whether it be a landscape or a nostalgic scene, I try to convey a message or a story that will invoke some kind of emotion within the viewer, may that be a sense of tranquillity and calmness as you allow your eyes to wander through a serene landscape, or stir a memory from yesteryear as I attempt to capture a moment in time, an experience, a nostalgic memory from times gone by – I also try to convey this within the unique ‘Geordie’ poems that accompany each and every one of the latest paintings. These poems are beautifully presented in an individually handmade booklet of the same title and are included with each of the hand signed and numbered Limited Edition Giclee Prints, which also come complete with a certificate of Authenticity.
I like to work in a variety of mediums, which include: Watercolour, Designer Gouache and Artists’ Oil to name but a few, and if I can bring people even a hint of pleasure through my art and poetry that I gain from painting and writing them, then I’ll be happy with that.
Once again, thanks for your interest in my work and I sincerely hope you enjoy browsing through my art and have a chuckle at the Geordie Poetry.”
