Event Details

Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill as we welcome Ruth Jacobs of Jacwicks Designs.

Ruth Jacobs is the founder of Jacwicks Designs and designer of the Perch range of waterproof sit-mats and picnic rugs.

The Perch Range was borne out of necessity one day on a Nordic walk in the Northumberland countryside. Needing something to sit on that was waterproof, easy to carry and pleasing, Ruth searched for a suitable item. Unable to find anything nice she decided to make one herself and the rest as they say is history.

Each Perch is handmade by Ruth at her home in the North East. Materials are soured from UK suppliers, prioritising fabric due to go to landfill, where possible. The Perches have been tested by Country Walking magazine against other sit-mat brands and came out on top for their versatility and ease of use. They have also been recommended by Walk, the magazine for the Rambles Association and were shortlist for the prestigious Gift of the Year awards.

The Perch range consists of: single person Pixy and Pocket Perches can fit into a pocket or small bags. They open up to a full cushion size able to protect bottoms from damp, dirty, dusty seating.

The Poly Perch can sit up to 2 people, is great for a picnic and comes with a handy loop for hooking with a carabineer clip to secure on rucksacks. The Pet Perch is for your fur baby to sit on when out and about, in the car, or home. It keeps surfaces free from damp, dirty paws and is warm and comfy to nestle on. There is also a handy Grab Ya Boots Bag to carry your dirty walking boots in.

When not sewing and designing, Ruth enjoys Nordic walking in the countryside or by the sea, always looking for that perfect place to Perch.

Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 12th November, 10am – 4pm to meet Ruth in person, buy one of her mats and find out a bit more about how she got started and how she designs and makes her products. Some of Ruth’s mats are also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop.

‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated inside the Heritage Centre.
