Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill. Our next Meet the Maker event is with Marie Philpott .
Marie is a silk painter who works from her home studio in Cleadon, Tyne and Wear and has been a member of the Guild of Silk painters since 2012. She uses dyes and paints and different weights of silk to produce different effects. Her special area of interest is in creating silk-on-glass artefacts that are both decorative and functional. Her current range includes serving platters, vases, bowls, and coasters.
Marie likes to experiment with free flowing techniques for abstract work and uses gutta or wax for more traditional designs. “What I love about silk painting is the wonderful way patterns emerge as the colours mix and blend. With silk painting each piece is totally unique.”
In addition to hand-painted silk scarves and pictures, Marie also produces lampshades, cushion covers, notecards, and book covers. She offers talks and silk painting workshops for individuals and groups.
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 23rd July, 10am – 4pm to meet Marie in person, buy some of her work and find out more about her silk painting.
Some of Marie’s creations are also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop for the 2 weeks running up to her in person event day.
‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated in the foyer area inside the Heritage Centre.
