Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill. Our next Meet the Maker is Beyond The Byre Artisan Jewellery.
Carolyn and David Asquith are the husband and wife team behind Beyond The Byre Artisan Jewellery. Carolyn and David now reside in the beautiful Parish of Blanchland, moving there in 2017.
Carolyn has lived in the North East since she was 18 after starting her art journey at Sunderland Polytechnic. After a few twists and turns she returned to art, as a teacher in 2001, working primarily with children with special needs, until 2021 when she retired from education to begin the next stage of her jewellery journey.
David, who originates from Yorkshire, moved to the North East in 2013, his other job is as a co-worker at IKEA, but his true love is working creatively with copper, brass and silver, which he does whenever he isn’t away from home.
Carolyn and David’s jewellery journey began in Lockdown 2020, when David was furloughed he began carving wood and creating small pendants and keyrings, Carolyn used her evenings to develop skills using enamel and metal art clay.
Initially they worked from their dining room table, which proved challenging at times, however in September 2021 they began to realise their ambitions when they constructed a wooden studio in their garden. With power, good lighting and stunning views the pair spend most of their time in ‘The Shed’, where they develop new pieces, make orders and take commissions.
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 16th April 10am – 4pm to meet Carolyn and David in person, buy some of their beautiful jewellery or maybe even commission a bespoke piece of jewellery.
Some of Beyond The Byre’s jewellery is also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop, each piece is unique and individually designed.
‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated in the foyer area inside the Heritage Centre.
