We are really pleased that some of our musical friends from Northern Roots, Hop Skiffle & Jump and Kiddar’s Luck will be with us as part of Make Music Day for relaxed acoustic sessions playing in the Heritage Centre Courtyard (weather dependant).
Expect to hear some of the most experienced folk singers and musicians in the North East, as they bring with them local songs and tunes about life in the North East.
Make Music Day is a celebration of music making around the world. Every year people and organisations from 1,000 towns and cities in 120 countries create events to share their music. All Make Music Day events are free to watch, so please drop by anytime for our own Make Music Day at the Heritage Centre between 12pm – 3pm.
If you fancy a nice locally brewed beer or real dairy ice-cream, then you’ll be pleased to hear we are also joined by Firebrick Brewery with their pop-up stall, and Scoops n Smiles in their vintage ice-cream van!
Firebrick Brewery supply a range of craft beers and lagers, perfect treat while you enjoy the live music (and a great Father’s Day gift). Our café is open for drinks, snacks, lunch and sweet treats as usual.

More about the musicians:
Northern Roots – are made up of Bill Elliott, Kevin Youldon and Katherine Raine. Bill and Kevin are well known North East folk musicians and often perform at the Heritage Centre, they’re also part of the Cloth Cap Temperance Band. They’re joined by Katherine to form their new band ‘Northern Roots’. Katherine is a primary school Teacher, originally from Yorkshire and is a fine musician and a member of the ‘New Tyneside Orchestra’.
Hop, Skiffle and Jump are the North East’s leading skiffle band. Playing authentic 50s songs they tell the story of how skiffle changed the world of popular music. Led by well known folk singer and guitarist Ken Tonge, their show recreates the lively, fun, join-in spirit of music in the late 50s. Ken is accompanied by Julie on fiddle, William on tea chest bass, Fred on guitar, Alison on washboard and another Alison dancing to their music. Expect to do a bit of singing along, listening to some funny anecdotes, joining the band table banging, foot stamping, skat singing and hand clapping for their finale, “Mama don’t allow”!
Kiddars Luck are 3 musicians, John Dixon, Colin McLelland and Mike Davidson – who all hail from the North East of England and specialise in traditional music from the region. They also write their own songs and tunes. They have been singing and playing for more than 25 years but recently have come together in a newly formed ‘Kiddars Luck’ specialising in 3 part harmony singing. They have performed for community groups and at local festivals including the Beamish Museum King Coal Celebration, Harvest Festival and Georgian Celebration, The Woodhorn Mining Museum, Tanfield Railway, The Tommy Armstrong Society and the Land of Oak and Iron. They are also long standing members of the ‘Cloth Cap Temperance Band’ playing as volunteers at Beamish Open Air Museum regularly in the Band Hall or in the Sun Inn Pub entertaining children and adults alike with their unique brand of North East folk music.
