Event Details

Our new exhibition in the ‘Inside Out Gallery’ at the Heritage Centre are classic works of art, recreated through inspirational photography by the Historical and Mythical Imagery Group.

Great Artists create pictures which draw us into their creations as observers to consider the subject matter of their work. Their art gives us stories and even emotions through composition, positioning, how light falls within the image and how the additional touches and backgrounds enhance our knowledge and appreciation of the masterpiece.

The Historical and Mythical Imagery Group use their talents to explore the works of the great masters to re-create their paintings as tableaux, which they then photograph. This requires an intense observation of everything that makes up the painting so that they can find actors to play the characters, source or make the costumes and stage properties. They expertly study the hair and make-up and they spend a lot of time finding locations and of course designing the staging and lighting for the shoot. They go to great lengths to bring all these skills together to complete the experience by taking a photograph that is as honest to the original painting as possible, so that audiences and viewers take the same journey into the creativity of the artist. It builds respect for the master artist and curiosity about the composition of the final picture.

This exhibition shows a range of works that the group have undertaken. The members of the group come from all walks of life and backgrounds and bring enthusiasm as well as skills to the project. They give their time and expertise freely from actors and dancers to teachers and electricians. People join the group who share the passion for looking at history and art this way and for the fun of the challenge.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition and that you are inspired by the art works and see the artistry in the comparison with the photograph.
