Event Details

#ThanksToYou is our chance to say “Thank you” to all of the people who have played the National Lottery which has enabled Land of Oak & Iron to receive funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

To celebrate we have this special event where you can take part in a free guided bird walk from our Heritage Centre with a local ornithologist, Michael Turner. Explore our diverse and rich heritage, returning to café shrub for elevenses, included as part of the event.

The lower Derwent Valley is rich in bird life at any time of the year. This walk will  highlight the variety of birds that can be seen and heard throughout the different habitats. As well as the famous red kites we may see buzzard, kingfisher, dipper, tree sparrow, grey wagtail and jay. Specialities this time of year are the visiting winter thrushes including redwing and fieldfare. Michael will also give a fascinating account of the findings of local ornithologist and former Crowley employee Thomas Robson 1812-1884.

Please wear warm clothes and shoes suitable for walking outdoors, waterproofs may be necessary depending on the weather.

Booking essential, you must bring a National Lottery ticket or Scratchcard to the event to be able to take part.
