Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill. Our next Meet the Maker is with Sarah Gee Fine Art
Sarah is a self taught wildlife artist and newly published author based at her home in Durham where she lives with her husband, their son and cocker spaniel Bonny.
Sarah has always been passionate about wildlife, especially African elephants which have been her favourite animal for as long as she can remember. Sarah’s first published book was always destined to be called ‘Mr Elephant’.
Her life like pencil drawings are largely inspired by British wildlife, especially after a long walk around the Derwent Walk with Bonny.
Sarah has a lovely range of printed homeware, gifts, prints and greetings cards—all of which are printed in the north east and where possible are as eco friendly as they can be, to help the creatures that inspire her artwork.
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 11th June 10am – 4pm to meet Sarah.
Some of Sarah’s artworks and homeware are also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop for the 2 weeks running up to her in person event day.
‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated in the foyer area inside the Heritage Centre.

Event Details
Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill. Our next Meet the Maker is artist Norma Burke.
Norma is a local artist based in Whitley Bay and is a retired teacher who took to painting when she finally had time to do something more creative with her free time.
Norma’s inspiration comes from the beautiful north east coast line, where Norma takes photographs while out walking with her dog. “We are so lucky to have such amazing beaches and castles on our doorstep”. She uses these captured images to create acrylic paintings on canvas at home in her studio.
Norma also collects sea glass from the beaches when out walking, mainly from the sands at Whitley Bay. She then uses the sea glass to create her range of tea-light holders, decorations and cards – “the only problem is trying to remember to take the glass treasures out my pockets before ending up in the washing machine”!
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 25 June, 10am – 4pm to meet Norma in person, buy some of her original artwork, greetings cards, painted pots and more, or maybe even commission a painting.
Some of Norma’s artworks, cards, coasters and painted pots are also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop for the 2 weeks running up to her in person event day.
‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated in the foyer area inside the Heritage Centre.

Land of Oak & Iron are excited to host the next of our regular ‘Meet the Maker‘ events at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill. Our next Meet the Maker event is with Ryton Men’s Shed.
Ryton Men’s Shed is a not for profit organisation specifically open to men from the areas of Gateshead and the Tyne Valley. They offer a variety of activities based around things you would do in your garden shed or garage. This usually involves producing a finished item either individually or together as a group in our workshop. By making items for themselves or to sell, members are given a sense of purpose and achievement.
The idea behind Men’s Shed is to give men the opportunity to feel good about themselves, be productive, contribute towards their community and most importantly make friends. This in turn promotes good health and well-being.
“Our mission is to promote friendship and community spirit by giving people the opportunity to get together with like minded individuals.”
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Saturday 9th July, 10am – 4pm to meet some members of the Men’s Shed in person, buy some of their work and find out more about what they do.
Some of the Men’s Shed creations are also available to purchase for a limited period in the Heritage Centre shop for the 2 weeks running up to their in person event day.
‘Meet the Maker’ will be outside under cover of the gazebo unless the weather is cold/rainy – in which case it will be situated in the foyer area inside the Heritage Centre.

Event Details
Land of Oak & Iron are excited to welcome the Whittonstall Community Band to the Heritage Centre.
The band played in the Courtyard not long after the new Heritage Centre was opened, so it’s great to have them back again.
They are an all age/ability band, who rehearse every Thursday evening from 6.30pm – 8.30pm during school term time at the church in Whittonstall and play ten (or so) concerts through the year.
“We welcome new members at any time, all you need is an interest in playing music and having fun – we may be able to sort out a loan instrument for you.“
Come along to the Heritage Centre on Sunday 10th July, 2pm – 4pm to hear some fantastic live music and find out more about the band.
The band will be performing outside under cover of the gazebo. No need to book and free for our café customers.
Whittonstall Community Band are funded by RWE Innogy UK, Kiln Pit Hill Wind Farm Community Fund.
Our café will be open for lunch and refreshments (polite notice our seating areas are for café customers – we have a lovely meadow area next to the Heritage Centre should you wish to bring a picnic)
