We’re really pleased to announce that the fantastic Time Bandits are back!
Come and join the amazing Time Bandits as they bring history alive with stories of the Home Guard and the North East during the Second World War.
“Dad’s Army does contain a great deal of truth: the muddling amateurishness, chronic shortages of weapons and equipment, Heath Robinson hardware and wide divergence of personal backgrounds all strike a factual chord. But the Home Guard remains affectionately risible because it was never tested. Those who fought alongside worker’s militias in Spain had witnessed a very different reality. In the event of an actual German invasion, the Volunteers of 1940 would have been expected to fight and almost certainly they would.
A memorable scene from the TV series features Mannering’s ill-assorted heroes manning a makeshift barricade, doling out their few shotgun cartridges and awaiting German tanks. Obviously, these never came; had they done so the results would have been swift, brutal and anything but comic.
If one tours the north-east coast and inland, evidence abounds: Northumbrian beaches are studded with tank traps, concrete and steel gun emplacements, pillboxes and some superbly restored batteries, particularly Blyth and Hartlepool. The latter did indeed see active service in the previous war: in the battle of December 1914 when the part-time gunners fought a good fight against marauding German battle-cruisers, a dozen British soldiers died, as did 80-odd civilians in the town, which was shattered by the bombardment; needless to say, this is not the stuff of comedy!
In quiet Northumbrian lanes and in most unexpected places one comes across further emplacements, seemingly in the most random pattern. These are, in fact, traces of the various ‘stop’ lines set up as a defence in depth against invasion.
It was anticipated the Home Guard would be charged with resisting the initial onslaught on the beaches then holding a series of fall-back positions to blunt the overall attack till a successful counter-attack could be launched. Most would have died or been captured. We aim to tell their story”.

Event Details
Join researcher and historian Helen MacFarlane and author and historian Val Scully for this fascinating, illustrated talk about the Great War and the men of Gibside. From the Derwent Valley to France, Salonika and Baghdad – tracing the Great War careers of the men of Gibside.
In 2018, the final year of the Centenary commemorations of the Great War, Helen, a volunteer researcher at Gibside, began to investigate how the war had affected the men working on the estate.
Basing the research on the 1911 census, she identified eight men who had served and discovered just how far they had ended up from the mines and pastures of home.
In this fascinating talk, Helen will tell the stories of the men, and how she constructed those stories from the wide variety of documents and records available to Great War researchers.
The talk will be introduced by local author and historian, Val Scully, who will say a few words about how Helen’s findings about these local men inspired her to research and publish the ‘People’s History of Gibside’.
Both Helen and Val will be available for Q&A after the talk, along with signed copies available to purchase.
Tickets £14.95 per person which includes a glass of wine (or soft drink).
Booking essential.
Other refreshments available to purchase from our café. Our evening talks are really popular and often sell out quickly – so book soon to avoid missing out.

Join calligraphy artist Chris Bowen for the next of his fascinating workshops learning the art of Calligraphy.
Chris’ workshops are really popular, so he’s going to run another one in the lead up to Christmas.
This detailed workshop will continue with techniques and learning gained from his first workshops – however, it is also suitable for those who have not had a go at calligraphy before as Chris will tailor the session for different levels and using italic lettering this time.
The workshop will include Italic lettering – characteristics, variations, tools etc. with demonstrations using brush, pens and pencils. Along with an explanation of worksheet: proportions, weight and penstrokes.
Participants will be working with 2 pencils to produce/explore gothic letterforms, then have a go with brush or pen.
About Chris: He has been a calligrapher for many years but started out as an oil painter. He studied at Hornsey College, London before working as a ceramic artist at Royal Worcester, then became a teacher in Worcester, Widnes, Liverpool and Blackfyne Comprehensive School where he was Head of Art, taking over from Sheila Mackie and then Derwentside College.
He was a member of the Liverpool Academy and couldn’t help being inspired by meeting so many creative people. He has practised and taught fine art and calligraphy for over 30 years and is passionate about historical scripts, having studied many original manuscripts at Durham Cathedral library.
He also produces more abstract work combining colourful backgrounds with medieval text and has exhibited in both Durham Cathedral, Hexham Abbey and more recently here at the Heritage Centre.
Tickets for the workshop are limited to allow quality teaching and 1:1 time with participants, so book soon to avoid missing out.
Tickets £28 including materials and a cup of tea or coffee.

This creative workshop will show you how to make your own, unique willow and paper lantern – it’s yours to keep, but we would really love it if you could come and be part of our little musical lantern parade on Sunday afternoon too.
Suitable for both adults and children aged 6 and over. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Younger children will need an adult to work with as it’s a little bit tricky for little fingers to make.
Places are limited. Due to room space, we kindly ask that it’s 1 person per lantern booking, or 1 (free) accompanying adult with a child making a lantern.
Workshop cost £10 per lantern (per person), including all materials.

Join us at the Heritage Centre for a fantastic live music evening, helping to raise money for our charity Groundwork NE & Cumbria.
We will be joined by 4 local bands, who will each perform a set during the evening. Come along for a great night of food, drink and live music. Cheer for your favourite band – the audience’s favourite wins the night!
THE BANDS:
Reservoirs: A 5 piece band from Consett, with influences from the likes of Talking Heads and Vampire Weekend, with country and jazz influences mixed in.
Detroit Tourist Board: A local band with Patrick on mic, uke and violin, Dom on acoustic guitar and mic, Nicola on uke and mic, Tom on bass and Liam on drums.
TALES: A 4 piece alt-rock band from Newcastle and Sunderland, with Michael Goodfellow (vocals and guitar) and Colin Wan (drums), Eliott Brown (bass) and Sam Fisher (lead guitar). Their first single, ‘Amitriptyline’ was released in 2019, with their second single, ‘Muscle Memory’, released in 2020. This earned the band their first radio airtime through ‘BBC Introducing North East’. They went on to release three further singles; ‘Nosedive’, ‘What We Talk About’, and ‘Icarus’, receiving further radio coverage and featuring in NARC magazine. They continue to gig and write new music to this day, always keen for a rocking show!
Holiday in Tokyo: A four-piece alt-pop outfit from County Durham. The band focus their song writing on being as honest as possible, leaning heavily into themes of jealousy, nihilism, love and nostalgia. Sonically, they blend elements from 70s funk, neo-soul bedroom pop and early 2000’s alternative rock. Their shifts in genre are held together by a cohesive sound of chorus guitars, snappy drums and warm vocals.
Café & Bar: Our café will have a special evening menu, including burgers, nachos, loaded fries and some of our favourites for the evening (vegetarian available) along with tea/coffee, alcoholic and soft drinks, and sweet treats to enjoy alongside the live music.
No need to book, just turn up for a great evening.
Doors open 6pm, bands playing from around 6.30pm, (last food order 8pm, last drinks orders 11pm). Get here early to grab a seat, order your food and settle in for a great evening of live music.
