Event Details

Find out how iron was turned into steel hundreds of years ago at Derwentcote Steel Furnace. This Grade 1 Listed Building is one of the few remaining examples of this type of furnace in the country.

This is a rare opportunity to see inside the 18th century furnace and experience authentic history for yourself. Learn how wrought iron was turned into steel through the cementation process; this is the last remaining piece of evidence of this type of steel making in the north east.

This guided tour will not only take you into the furnace, but also down to the woodland which isn’t currently open to the public, to see the workers cottages . The tour runs from 1pm to 3pm, places are limited so pre-booking is recommended.

The site is uneven, with access from the car park down a stony track; it is accessible to off-road pushchairs but would be difficult with everyday pushchairs.

This event is being run as part the Great Exhibition of the North 2018 and also as part of Heritage Open Days.
