Event Details

Discover the site of an 1870s coal mine, with extensive railway and coal working remains as you get involved in an archaeological investigation into the workings. There are remarkable remains of a complex water supply and power features, mine entrances and a culvert structure which this dig seeks to identify and understand the context of.

The workings were the creation of the Mickley Coal Company which had strong associations with the creation of the Catholic church in Prudhoe. The site later became part of West Wylam Colliery, though it was abandoned long before the colliery closed in 1961.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear and dress for the weather (sun hat and cream or waterproofs). Bring a packed lunch and a drink if staying all day. All tools, equipment and instruction will be provided.
